Respecting Boundaries

Any relationship, personal, professional or otherwise, has its inherent boundaries. Behaviours that are fine between friends may be considered inappropriate or even offensive among co-workers. Actions can be misinterpreted, causing stress and mistrust. Make sure you take the time to clarify expectations and boundaries in any new situation. For example, be clear about what level of contact is acceptable. Although you may be comfortable when a colleague puts an arm around your shoulder or shares a hug, remember that some people are not.
