What is the MBTI?

The Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator (MBTI) is a widely used tool for understanding personality and behaviour.  It was developed by Isabel Myers and Katharine Briggs to make Carl G. Jung’s theory of psychological type available to the general public. The MBTI can provide valuable insight into the different ways people view the world, relate to others, make decisions and organise their lives.  It is widely used in personal, career, and organizational development.  More than 3,000,000 Myers-Briggs Type Indicators are interpreted worldwide every year.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator does...

  • Promote understanding of self and others
  • Facilitate better communication between people
  • Respect uniqueness and honour diversity
  • Indicates how a person prefers to exercise his/her freedom
  • Recognize that human behaviour is far too varied and complex to be fully explained by 16 personality types

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator does not...

  • Pigeon-hole people by suggesting that their type completely defines them
  • Offer an excuse for a person's behaviour
  • Suggest that certain preferences or combinations of preferences are better or worse than others
  • Confine or limit a person's freedom
