The Adao Institute for Change is proud to announce approval of their OnMyBlock.ca neighbourhood web sites as a distributor of live AMBER ALERT information. Now, as soon as a child is abducted anywhere in Canada, neighbourhood web sites across the country will broadcast that information live from Code Amber.
The AMBER Alert system was created in the United States in 1996 following a tragic incident that involved the kidnapping and murder of nine-year-old Amber Hagerman. The web-based alert system, Code Amber, was founded in August 2002 in response to a surge in child abductions across North America and the UK.
AMBER Alert is a warning system that quickly alerts the public of a missing or abducted child under 18 years who is in imminent danger. Specific criteria must be met before the Alert will be activated. When it is determined that an AMBER Alert is required, information about the victim or missing child will be displayed on electronic highway signs, radio, television and cable TV stations. The public should immediately call 9-1-1 or their local police force if they can provide the police with information relating to the AMBER Alert.
Because the first two to five hours of an abduction are the most crucial, early public involvement is critical. AMBER Alerts ensure that thousands of sets of eyes are looking for information to assist in saving a child's life and apprehending the abductor as quickly as possible. The recent involvement of the Ontario Association of Broadcasters is an exciting development in Canada. The O.A.B. will be a tremendous lifeline in search efforts, and AMBER Alert will take advantage to the fullest extent of their ability and readiness to provide the eyes on Canadian roadways and communities when one of our children is abducted.
With the new direct feed from AMBER Alert, whenever a Canadian AMBER Alert is issued it will be posted to all OnMyBlock.ca neighbourhood websites allowing members of our communities to watch for information to help return abducted children to their families.
